DURKL is an independent clothing brand that bridges the style gap between over-the-top streetwear and boring menswear. Our main goal is to bring classic, quality garments to the streetwear community. We draw inspiration from what we grew up wearing…hand-me-down americana and workwear from brands such as L.L. Bean, Levis, Carhartt, and Ralph Lauren. Through DURKL we hope to inspire individuality, and help you see beyond stereotypes.
DURKL is sold exclusively through boutiques around the world, our webshop, and soon, our first flagship store, Maketto.
DURKL has been featured in Complex, Hypebeast, High Snobiety, Woofin, The Washington Post, The Washingtonian, DC Modern Luxury, XLR8R, WAD, Vice, and many others.
In 2005, DURKL began designing clothes in our nations capital and over the years became one of the foundations of a burgeoning DC creative culture. The owners, staff, and friends were part of a small community of like-minded locals who saw the potential in a forgotten major city plagued with an ugly past but rich in history. At the time, Washington was being rebuilt with big money and phony national chains, so DURKL became a refuge for the city’s counter cultures that wanted something local, independent, and authentic.
In the summer of 2009, the brand moved its operations downtown into an old taxi repair garage on the ground level of the locally famed Goldleaf Studios. Over the next few years this space would bring together the many different cultures of Washington, DC through collaborative events, art shows, concerts, block parties, and product releases.
By 2010, DURKL had become a full lifestyle brand, offering outerwear, denim, button-down shirts, hats, t-shirts, and accessories to boutiques around the world in limited quantities. Parallel to DURKL’s growth, DC had emerged as a new destination for young creative agencies, media groups, restaurants, bars and musicians.
In 2012, DURKL teamed up with another local creative, and owner of Toki Undergroud, to create Maketto, a 6,000 sqft communal marketplace and lifestyle brand combining retail, restaurant, and café. Set to open in 2014, Maketto will house the first DURKL flagship store, a new restaurant by Chef Erik Bruner-Yang, and the first flagship for local coffee roasters, Vigilante Coffee.
