Universal Madness, opened their flagship store on Georgia Ave in 1985, becoming the first majority black owned clothing line based in Washington, DC. Beginning out of the trunk of their car Eddie Van and Tyrone Johnson would go on to sell their brand in a variety of national chains, including Footlocker, and even JC Penny. Considered the true originators of DC streetwear, Madness reflected the street culture and attitude of the late 80's early 90's Chocolate City. At the peak of their success, Madness had the whole city supporting them, from the top ball players and go-go acts, down to the local kids in the corner. Capping their success, the brand was featured in Spike Lee’s School Daze, dressing Experience Unlimited for the classic “Da Butt.” A true DC legend, the Madness brand continues on today.
In keeping with this proud history, DURKL is excited to announce the official DURKL x Universal Madness capsule collection. As a native Washingtonian, DURKL designer Will Sharp, said "when I started DURKL, a early dream of mine was to one day collaborate with some of the local brands I grew up wearing and Madness was the biggest of all of them." The collection will consist of two co-branded tee shirts and classic white DURKL x Madness athletic socks.
